SAVE THE DATE –Thursday, November 19th for our 2nd Annual Give Back Alexandria Fall into Giving Holiday Goods Drive. Start the seaon giving early by providing goods and gifts to Give Back Alexandria's partners - The Reading Connection and Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) of Northern Virginia.

Ongoing volunteer opportunities: 

Childcare volunteers for parenting classes and support meetings.  Email smay@scanva.org

Prepare a meal for a SCAN parenting class.  Email smay@scanva.org.

Serve as a public education ambassador to staff booths at community fairs and events.  Email rbeck@scanva.org


THE READING CONNECTION

Friday – Sunday, October 23 – 25:  Shop at Barnes & Noble in Clarendon and a portion of the proceeds will benefit The Reading Connection. 

Monday, November 16:  Orientation for Read-Aloud Volunteers

Wednesday – Thursday, December 23 – 24:  Volunteer as a gift wrapper at Barnes & Noble in Clarendon and raise money for The Reading Connection.

Ongoing volunteer opportunities: 

Read Aloud Volunteer – spend an hour once a month reading with kids in transitional housing shelters. 

Administrative Office help – assist with data entry, database maintenance, and other special projects.

Organize a book drive at your workplace, church, school, etc.

EDUCATION EVENTS                                   

ACT’s 5th Annual Nonprofit Excellence Forum, with keynote address by Cokie Roberts and professional development breakout sessions, will be held on Wednesday, October 21, 8:30 am- 12:30pm at First Baptist Church.  This event is sponsored by Capital One.  To register, click here.  

 

ABLE’s Fall Event:  Good to Great – Assessing Your Board’s Effectiveness –  One important area for measuring success is board performance and an annual self-assessment of the board of directors’ accomplishments and performance is essential.  The event will be held on Thursday, November 5th at the Holiday Inn Old Town.  Cost is $35.  Learn more by visiting  www.ablealex.org
